What to Know About 'Ozempic Face' and How to Treat It

Updated: Aug 14

Weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy have become incredibly popular. They are constantly in the news, featured in advertisements, and frequently discussed on social media. The demand for these medications has been so high that NBC recently reported we might face a shortage of them through 2025. In just five months after FDA approval, nearly 80,000 new prescriptions were written for Zepbound (tirzepatide), even surpassing Wegovy.

As a family nurse practitioner, I have seen the severe health impacts of obesity, such as coronary artery disease, hypertension, diabetes, and kidney disease. While GLP-1 agonists like Ozempic can cause side effects (including gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea and abdominal pain), their benefits in managing serious obesity-related health conditions often outweigh the risks.

I'm optimistic about the advancements these medications represent in managing chronic conditions over time. Most patients on these medications can lose an average of 15-21% of their body weight when tolerating the highest weekly dose. However, as an aesthetic nurse practitioner, I recognize the importance of collagen biostimulation for these patients. Rapid weight loss can result in a “deflated” appearance in the face, making individuals look gaunt, drawn, and even unwell. At Luxe Beauty, we aim to ensure your face reflects how good you feel inside.

What's a Biostimulator and How Does It Work?

Biostimulators like Sculptra (poly-L-lactic acid or PLLA) and hyperdilute Radiesse (calcium hydroxylapatite) are excellent options for restoring facial volume lost due to weight loss medications. Imagine your youthful college days when your face was naturally plump and healthy-looking. Weight loss medications can diminish that volume. While hyaluronic acid fillers can help, stimulating your body to produce its own collagen can provide longer-lasting, more natural results. Sculptra and Radiesse both stimulate collagen production but in different ways.

What's the Difference Between Radiesse and Sculptra?

Radiesse offers instant results that continue to improve over four to six months. This collagen stimulator provides an airbrushed look and enhances overall skin texture and firmness, creating a lifting and tightening effect. Radiesse is versatile, suitable for various areas of the face and body, making it one of the most adaptable fillers and collagen stimulators available.

Maintain a Great Skincare Routine

Patients on weight loss medications often experience a loss of their skin’s natural glow and may develop a dull complexion. To counter this, ensure you have a solid skincare routine that includes a cleanser ( ZO Gentle Cleanser or ZO Exfoliating Cleanser), an exfoliator (such as ZO Exfoliating Polish), a toner (like ZO Complexion Renewal Pads), and an SPF (I recommend Colorescience’s Glow Face Shield or Face Shield Flex). Using these products can reduce sebum production, minimize pore size, and improve skin texture. Always consult with your provider before starting any new skincare routine to ensure you choose the right products for your needs.

GLP-1 medications for weight loss have the potential to revolutionize healthcare. However, they come with side effects. Ensure you consult with a board-certified healthcare provider who cares about your aesthetic results. You’ll be grateful when your collagen production increases in all the right places.
